Fun-tastic Facts about the Bible

Sterling Franklin

Here are some interesting figures for you about the Bible you likely
read from:

- Total Number of Books in the Bible: 66
(Old Testament has 39 books, New Testament has 27.)

- Total Number of Authors in the Bible: 40 (debated 42 by some, but 40
is a good and honest ballpark figure.)

- Total Number of Chapters in the Bible: 1,189
(Old Testament has 929 chapters, New Testament has 260.)

- Total Number of Verses in the Bible: 31,173
(Old Testament has 23,214 verses, New Testament has 7,959.)

- Words? 773,692 (592,439 Old | 181,253 New)
- Letters? 3,566,480 (2,728,100 Old | 838,380 New)

- Shortest Chapter in the Bible: Psalm 117 (2 verses!)
- Shortest Book in the Bible: 2 John if you count verses, 3 John if
you count words (so technically, 3 John is the shortest book in the
Bible)

- Longest Verse in the Bible: Esther 8:9 (89 words!!!)
- Longest Chapter in the Bible: Psalm 119 (176 verses)
- Longest Book in the Bible: Psalms (150 chapters)

- Shortest Verse: (Arguably 1 Thessalonians 5:16) "Rejoice Evermore"
in Greek is supposedly one word, and John 11:35 is the shortest verse in
the English King James Version ("Jesus Wept").

- Longest Name in the Bible: Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz (I would hate to
see him take a speed-writing test. He wouldn't even finish writing his
first name within the time limit!) His name means "prey speeds" and he
was one of Isaiah's children.

- Word "God" is found 4,370 times
- Word "Jehovah" ('YHVH') is found 6,855 times
- Word "Lord" is found 7,736 times

- Does the Bible mention an ostrich? YEP!!!!

- The best Name (above all Names)/word in the Bible: Jesus - He came
to seek and to save the lost.

The Old Testament was originally written in Hebrew, and the New
Testament was originally written in Koine Greek. Looking into the Greek
in some passages shows a lot of specifics that some translations don't
quite pick up. Greek is a very specific language.
