mandatum novum do vobis
ut diligatis invicem sicut dilexi vos ut et
vos diligatis invicem. (Latin Vulgate, John 13:34)
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another;
as I
have loved you, that ye also love one another. (KJV, John 13:34)
The MANDATUM NOVUM - new commandment (mandate) - is the origin
of the
title "Maundy" Thursday. Mandatum Thursday through the generations has
been shortened/corrupted (ahem...) to Maundy! :)
This commandment is actually
somewhat 'recycled' in a sense. The old
commandment was in Leviticus 19:18: "Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear
any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour
as
thyself: I am the LORD." The new part was a raised standard, as Jesus said:
as I have loved you!
John
writes in 1 John a TON about loving others. If one doesn't love
his brothers, the love of the Father is not in him. Anyway, if you want
to keep up with the schedule of reading, we are going to start the
Gospel of John (soon we'll do I John) and see more awesome material in
the Word of God. :)
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have
love
one to another. (John 13:35)
