Stock Market
League is a league combining mathematics, economic trends,
and the dumb luck of the stock market itself that will leave one individual and
one team
with prizes! Yes, and I did say 'Team'. I'll get to that in
a bit.... Also, since I am writing the calculation questions for
weeks 2 through 5, I will not be participating in my team's decision process,
although I will pick 3 stocks and guessing the weekly outcomes in competition. (So I will know the answer but not tell anybody before the deadline.)
Winners of the 3 Stock Selection (Week 1) will receive ribbons. Individual winner of
the whole shebang will win a trophy.
The overall winning Team will win medals.
What this League is meant to be...
Fun as mess!
An individual and team activity.
A lesson in Economics.
A tutorial in researching stocks. |
What this League is NOT meant to be...
Gambling (we are NOT investing, either). |
How to Play...
Stock Market League is divided up into two major sections of pointage:
|
All that needs to
be done by the Week 1 deadline is your selection of 3
stocks. These stocks can be from any of the following
markets: Nasdaq, NYSE, DOW Jones, or any other common market. There are some
oddball ones out there, so avoid those. They typically don't earn
a lot.
Your 3 selected stocks will be your 'long term' investment, and at the
end of the five weeks, based on how the stocks did, points will be
allotted as follows:
- For every point gained (final value - starting value), you will gain
10 points on your score.
- For every point lost on the stock, 10 points will be taken off your
score. |
|
For Weeks 2
through 5, the setup is as follows:
You will be given 3 stocks
(everyone guesses the same given stocks), a link to the trends on the
stock, and a box in which you will guess how many points will be gained
(e.g., +2) or lost (e.g., -4.5) between Monday's opening and Friday's
closing. If you leave the + or - off, a + will be assumed.
You may guess as many times as you wish before the deadline. The
latest guesses will be taken. Each
stock is worth 100 points,
and the lowest you can get for a stock is 0 points, even if you guessed
REALLY badly. You will lose 10
points per stock point off.
Included for a possible 50 bonus
points will be 2 Calculation
Questions, where you will have to apply economic principles to
figure out an answer. It really isn't that boring when you get 50
points ahead of everyone else who slacked off!
Guesses will be due the Monday of the start of the week at noon (12 pm). The maximum
possible score for these 4 weeks is 1400,
and the points from week 1 will be added (or subtracted for all
matters) to get your final score. |
Individual Play vs. Team Play
Individual Play is self-explanatory. Team Play consists of the
combined scores of 4 players.
If you wish to not be placed on a random team, but have groups of up to
4 on the same team, I must get agreement from ALL parties by September 1.
You may have groups of 2 together, but you will be placed with others
in groups of 4 if so. Come up with CLEAN team
names and possible team colors
(two), and we'll see about a logo.
