In Memory Of...

My classes are dropping like flies...thankfully...and I'll write a summary of each course as it wraps up.  This was definitely not my best semester out of the four full ones I've had so far at NC State.  Grades aren't the most important thing, you know....  It was odd how it seemed as if all the Christian organizations backed up this year.  For example, Going Public was one more service-based Christian organization that shut down in Fall.  Project State was one of my faves, where we just went around two by two (theoretically...) and told people about Jesus, but that shut down this year, as well.  Preacher Gary was out there a bunch this past week, but still....  So I guess I can say that this year was an 'In Memory Of' with respect to Christian outreach on campus.  I believe God will do something bigger in Fall, and maybe even summer!  We'll see.  Next up is SUMMER SESSION 1!  I can't wait...to finish!

Answer for the Problem of Death

(05.31.03) May flowers bloomed this month.  Hope they brought Pilgrims!  June's page will be up soon.  God bless!

(05.27.03) Right now, I'm right on the verge of freakin' out.  My summer courses aren't especially hard this time, but I may have needed more of a break this summer since I took a summer class last year, too.  I took a test online just for laughs that 'determined' whether you were burned out or not.

(25-50) You're doing well.
(51-75) You're OK if you take preventive action.
(76-100) You're a candidate for burnout.
(101-125) You're burning out.

My score: 100.

I tried sleep, and I'm still tired.  I'm probably going to take a nap soon before I really hit studying hard.  I have a test tomorrow in Religions of the World (REL 300).  We went through Hinduism this unit, and it's an interesting religion...very non-Western and new-agey, for sure.  There are over 300 million gods in Hinduism...dang, that's a lot!  It's got a lot of aspects in common with Buddhism, but the whole end goal of Hinduism is to follow a Way (either Action, Knowledge, or Devotion) to escape existence from this infinite tortured expanse and to escape the 'karma' (consequences of actions) of living.  If you don't follow your Way right, you'll come back with karma attached, determining which caste you'll be attached to...if you come back as a human.  That's unlikely, though.  I have some verses that come to mind, though...

Galatians 1:4 - Jesus gave Himself for our sins, that He would rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of God our Father.

John 14:6 - Jesus said to him, "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.  No man comes to the Father but by Me."

Anyway, God bless you all, and don't burn out!  I haven't yet, but my nerves sure are frazzled!

(05.24.03) I'd be surprised if you haven't heard of Homestar Runner yet.  Anyway, I rated each one of Strong Bad's emails on a scale of 1-10 (up to #73).  Here are most of the ones I gave ratings of 6 or higher:

#6 (7)  -  #8 (6)  -  #18 (6)  -  #26 (6)  -  #36 (6)  -  #37 (7)  -  #46 (7)  -  #50 (6)  -  #53 (6)  -  #61 (6)  -  #62 (7)  -  #63 (6)  -  #64 (10)  -  #65 (6)  -  #72 (7)

These open up new windows to view, by the way.

I got the CD Printer and some CD-Rs to print on.  Sweet!  I'm going to redo some of the DJ Sterf songs, too, so watch out for the second release of the CD!

(05.22.03) Gosh...sitting in two classes for 90 minutes a piece in nothing but lecture format really makes for a boring time!  I have Kentucky Fried Brains right now after the second straight day of it.  I calculate I'll have to read 15 pages in each class every day, including holidays and weekends, to get an easy A and A+.  That's a miracle in itself if I complete half that requirement!  In both my classes, we have a test just about every week or so, so I have to keep on my toes or I'll fall behind.

I'm going to try to re-record some of the DJ Sterf songs today after I get some studying done (...or not).  I need to redo "Creation" due to a mess-up in my lyrics as well as the potential of doing better.  I'll probably also redo Wonderful to add crazy phat American Idol harmonies to it.  That will be the heat.  I'm also considering buying one of those CD surface printers.  The cheapest one I've found so far is an Epson EZCD-4200, but I may want to go a bit better than the cheapest.  We always pick the cheapest as a family, and it always blows up in our faces!  Maybe the 5700 is better.  Still, $500 is a bunch of dough.  The love of money is the root of all evil, but the hate of it is stupid!  We need to use it wisely, and sometimes the cheapest alternative is NOT the best option.

So say I took this route:

Epson EZCD-4200 + Ink  ...  $340
200 Diamond CD-Rs  ...  $60
100 Double CD-Cases  ...  $60

...and the already given costs:
Printing costs per 100  ...  $25
Stationery  ...  $15

Total cost for the first hundred CDs  ...  $500
Material Cost per CD  ...  $5.00

Total cost for the second hundred CDs  ...  $180 ($20 for ink)
Material Cost per CD  ...  $1.80

Making a #1 Billboard Album  ...  Priceless
Making a #10,000 Billboard Album  ...  About 50 cents

...and remember, that's not including the time I took for this project.  Sheesh, I'm making about $0.00 an hour!  Remember that the DJ Sterf CD currently has 22 tracks.  I'm thinking I could have done a 15-track CD and then come out with a new one shortly after, but I'm too ambitious.  Just look at my summer schedule!  3 hours of full-blown lecture every weekday!  NICE!

DJ STERF FOREVAH!

(05.21.03) So I enter my first class after a very easy and quick time of parking, and I find out that the first teacher does not give A+ grades.  That takes a ton of pressure off of me since all I have to get is a 93 for an A.  That's pretty easy.  My Psychology teacher says he drinks all the time and goes to bars for a hobby.  I need a 93.5 for an A+.  SWEET!!!  The only problem is that I will have about 40 pages of textbook reading a night, if not more.  Let's see...at 5 minutes a page, that's 3.33 hours of reading unless I skim!  I always liked 2% better.

I love teaching kids, but if VBS is the best gig that's opening up this year, that's weak.  That will be at the end of July, but nothing is happening in between.  Maybe I'm not looking in the right places or being in the right place at the right time.  I certainly don't know.

Anyway, have a good one, and God bless...

(05.20.03) This journal area is getting kinda messy!  I'm going to have to give each one a title at some point in the future!

My sister Sybelle is going to try to enter the Christian Artist Talent Search (CATS) even though she has a ton of *DOGS* at her 'mobile home'.  If you haven't heard her sing, or needless to say, any of my sisters, you should sometime.  My sisters got their own TV show in NC with just them singing because they were so good.  Anyway, I'm hoping my sister Sybelle gets her entry in on time.  She's a shoe-in with at least some recording label if she does.  What bothers me the most, though, is how people who don't know her talents write her off as someone who can't do much.  Two areas that have been neglected the past 5-10 years of her life are drawing and public music ministry.  I hope to see her use those talents to bless others as God has planned for her to do.

Guess the Weather League has begun, but registration is open until the 22nd!  The rules are on the page.  I bet you can beat Kelly Garren at it since he guessed the high for the first day as '0923098234098' degrees Fahrenheit.  Oh, dear...I didn't know Anchorage got that hot!

School starts back tomorrow.  I'm going to archive and clean up this page some today and see what the future holds for my GPA and me in summer!  No matter what, it's going to be a miracle!

(05.19.03) I start back on Wednesday with 2 new classes!  OH JOY!!!

REL 300     REL TRADS OF WORLD     MTWHF     09:50 - 11:20
PSY 200     INTRO TO PSYCH     MTWHF     11:40 - 01:10P

(Total Credit Hours: 6)

I got my summer parking permit, which took me about 2 hours of standing in line to get, and I got my books from the bookstore, so I should be pretty much set.  The problem with the parking permit line was that three ladies were taking people one-by-one for about 5 minutes a piece and typing in their information.  I could have done their 5 minute job in about 30 seconds!  My 'teller' had long painted-red fingernails and typed one letter at a time (she was 'hunting & pecking').  Most people had their cell phones go off.  Now I know why some people want to stop the whole ringtone thing!

Happy Graduation to Rachel, my friend who is homeschooled!  She got her diploma yesterday, and had a whole program set up for it.  It's the only graduation I've been to with Praise & Worship.  I threw in my two cents about Rachel (mainly 2 Timothy 3:15 -- yes, 3:15 -- and Romans 8:28), and some others did, as well.  It was pretty cool.

(05.13.03) I'm finally done!...until next week, that is.  I went to the review session for my Java class, and that finished up very well.  I get my grade in a matter of hours.  Today, I'm going to host Bible Trivia at Teenz4theLord.com as well as help my fellow Jesus Preachers start a web radio station.  We'll see how that turns out!

To start a web radio station, you need to have a good microphone, about $5 a month for hosting service, a LOT of time, and decent .WAV editing software.  I have all of those except for the abundance of time!  In our setup, we want to have a schedule where you can tune in and catch a program formulaically...meaning that if you want to hear 'Gospel Gazebo', you can tune in at a set time.  Our radio host, Live365.com, offers a simple option of a scheduler that puts sound files into time blocks...for ten extra dollars.  Without it, we have to make the total audio length a denomination of an hour.  Here's a little simpler illustration for you:

Say we have these segments:

Travis' Soapbox [15 minutes]
DJ Sterf Music [5 minutes]
Jed's Hizouse [20 minutes]
DJ Sterf fo Sheezy [10 minutes]
Danford's Moment [10 minutes]

Since all of these segments end up being an hour long, we can assign set time blocks for each...for example, at the 12:00 hour:

12:00: Travis' Soapbox
12:15: DJ Sterf Music
12:20: Jed's Hizouse
12:40: DJ Sterf fo Sheezy
12:50: Danford's Moment

...and the same for the 1:00 hour and the 2:00 hour and on and on.  If we made the total audio length 37 minutes, people would end up being confused as to what they are hearing and what they want to hear.  Maybe we should get the scheduler!!!

I also undertook the project of submitting DJ Sterf.Com to a ton of award sites to see how it would fare as of May 13, 2003.  This site has been up just over 2 months now, and I hope that many people have been blessed by it.  The most popular page is the Home page, then the Everyday Life page, and close behind that, the Music page.  My web hit counter registers number of unique visitors: not individual page views.  So far, the Home page has over 1250, the Everyday life has over 600, the Music 500, and down from there.  I should publicize this section more: Bible Studies!  May God bless you richly!

CSC 216
(Java 2: Applications with Java)

With a rocky start, this class was more stress than I thought it would be.  The final exam will tell the story for sure, but it's been nothing but catch-up in there!  Funerals don't help, either, and my grandmother Rita Cuffey and my friend Danny McGregor from High School passed away this semester.  Thankfully, there is an Answer for the Problem of Death!  God is always Good, and He has helped me get through this class as well as this rough and rocky semester.

In Java 2, we had 4 programs, each worth 12.5% of our grade.  10% was determined by in-class exercises (which relied solely on attendance).  The rest of the grade was made up of the midterm and final, each worth 20%.

Jason Schwarz was my teacher, and he was definitely on top of his Java game!  He provided vivid examples of the material, as well as answered e-mails of the students (which is actually pretty rare at this university).  The TAs, especially John Owens, were excellent.  John especially took tons of time out of his busy schedule to help us.  He even held a review session for the exam that certainly helped me out tremendously!  All in all, this class was fun, and would have been more restful if I hadn't had 2 lines of code in my program that boffed up!  So...take Schwarz if you are at NC State and need to take Java 2!

(05.12.03) I owned that New Testament exam so much I should have taken it HOME!  I needed at least an 85 on it to keep an A+.

- In Loving Memory Of... -
REL 312
(Introduction to New Testament)

I got through this one unscathed...100.0 before the exam, and maybe even after.  Dr. Adler has a real gift for teaching, and he knows his stuff.  It wasn't one of those Seminary courses, where you'd be preached to each day.  He basically was a contact lens through which we learned the material.  That's both good and bad, but either way, the class was pretty sweet, and I would actually recommend it!  (...and that's almost a first)  I found out that my new advisor for Religious Studies is Dr. Adler, too, so I was like 'sweeeeeeeet!'

My niece Natalie was awfully cute and same with my nephew Evan this weekend.  Evan got dedicated in Atlanta (Hotlanta).  Evan is really ...fat!  I got back from the visit at 10 pm last night and started studying for New Testament.  It was a very good and involved visit.  Not one of those visits where you could take the time to study ;).  I also tried to study in the car...and when I almost threw up, I stopped!  Anyway, God bless, fo sheezy, y'all.

Tomorrow, I am helping start the radio station for Jesus Preachers, as well as host Bible Trivia at 8:30 pm at Teenz4theLord.  Who will win this week?!

(05.09.03) CRASH!  I didn't expect to do so badly on the Hebrew exam, and that was 40% of my grade.  Final Hebrew grade: A, (but not A+).  How did I get an 80 on the exam?  :-/  I dunno.  Maybe I should have slept more.  Dang.

Just a note: I now have a new section up on DJ Sterf Animals, including some pictures of a bird inside our house!

Last night, I went to get my mind off these exams by going to FunWerks.  Eddie just sat there like the whole time, and I played some DDR (Dance Dance Revolution).  I got 729 in a row on nonstop mode, but the reason the streak ended was because I didn't hit the arrow hard enough.  Before my computer crashed, I had some Christian songs that I put dance moves to.  That was pretty tight.  I still haven't restored everything to my hard drive.  I will definitely have to do that after May 13.  That's when my last exam takes place.  I played mini-golf with Steven.  I always try to beat him since he thinks he's a pro golfer, and I caught up to 1 stroke down with 4 holes left.  But on one hole, I needed to take a chance at a hole-in-one.  It was a multi-level hole, and I came about 1 inch from it dropping in, but it fell back down and that hurt.  Then I took an ultimate risk and hit a really awful shot.  It was ovah.  I lost something like 48-43 strokes on the Zebra course.  Maybe next time....

Today, I'm heading down for the weekend to Atlanta.  My nephew is being dedicated, and I haven't seen Natalie in a while, so I'm going to bring my study materials down and chill a while down there.  The problem is that I have to study now, or else I'm likely not even going to get an A+.  This whole exam business is freakin' me out right now.  I'm working hard, but it's not showing as much this semester.  The 18 hours of last semester are easier than the 16 of this one since these 16 have more subjectivity involved.  Plus, this semester, I missed 6 days due to funerals.  They certainly aren't fun.

Anyway, this semester, I have put out a CD, built a pretty decent website, missed 6 days of class due to funerals, applied for a job and fell on my face, had an awful intramural season (it was short as mess, too...I played all of 2 games and struggled), had a better in-class basketball season, hit Steven's car, led Bible Studies, started Bible Trivia, went to Bible Studies, been a 'Greeter' at Campus Crusade for Christ, totally been shot down for an MC position (they obviously don't think I'm that 'type' of guy), had the toughest time with my classes, learned how to play some really hard songs on Piano (almost done w/ Petit Chien), and much more.  In the near future, I'm going to help my friend Travis and some others start a web radio station on www.jesuspreachers.com.  That will be pretty cool.  I'm going to redo some songs on the DJ Sterf album, as well.  As in April, I had my Summer Hours displayed.

You all have a blessed weekend, and enjoy the weather if it isn't pouring down rain!

(05.08.03) I'm now finished with two classes full of tedium!  The beauty of Communications at NC State....

- In Loving Memory Of... -
COM 202
(Small Group Communications)

YEAH!!!!!  No more 75-minute lectures at 9:50 am about small groups!!!!!  I'll be glad to finish this Communication Major.  The classes I LEAST enjoy are the Communication courses.  There is way too much reading for the results we get and the learning we pick up.  I enjoyed actually working in a small group, but the rest is history.  I would prefer doing something interesting than reading 100 pages on how small groups should typically be between the sizes of 3 and 7 people.

I'll see how the grade turns out, because I did pretty decently on the exam.  Hopefully I will end up with an A or A+, but worst-case scenario after that one, I would end up with an A-.  My 19-page paper will have some part in that grade choice, too.  Either way, I worked my tail off in there and hope to get the best I can get!

- In ...Hating... Memory Of... -
COM 250
(Communication Media in History)

How random and boring can you get?  This class was the quintessential definition of boredom.  The lectures did not follow a straight path, and all we talked about the last unit was about the negotiation between technology and culture.  I still wish that the teacher would have let me drop this course this semester after my grandmother's death.  I know my schedule better than he does, and I wasn't in the right mind for dealing with this stuff after even peripherally helping out with plans for my grandma Rita Cuffey's funeral.

If you are a Communications major at NC State, you have to take this course, but after this one, I'm just glad to be alive.  I would recommend changing over to UNC more than taking COM 250.  It's just that bad.  One major qualm I had with the grading of the papers was that there were no comments to explain why some questions got Bs or Cs.  One of my friends put a few sentences about how one question did not apply to him, and he got an A+ on that question.  I ANSWERED the question and discussed in thorough detail (over 1 page long) why I picked the decision, and I got a B on that question...with NO COMMENTS!!!  I can get anywhere between a B+ and an A in that class, and I'm hoping for at least an A-.  This class just plain wasted my time and effort, and I wish I hadn't had to take it.

(05.07.03) PLEASE, NO MORE SMALL GROUP COMMUNICATIONS!!!!! I just finished a 19-page paper on the dynamics of my small group throughout the semester. Ug. I still have to study for both COM 202 and COM 250 tomorrow, though. I wish for COM 202 that we didn't have to take the final exam if we did the essay instead. Mine was 8 parts....

I just have to make sure that I don't crash and burn this week during finals. This will be my hardest day by far in the semester, seeing as I have about 180 pages in the textbook left to read for tomorrow. I hate reading. Guess I gotta learn to love it these next few hours!

On Monday night, we had a bird in our house. It was SO CUTE, so I was trying to take pictures with one hand and trying to catch it in a big bag to bring it outside in the other. It was some sort of wren, and I do have pictures of it, but not the best quality. It was neat: it could cling to the ceiling and hang down. That's pretty keen right there. Anyway, I have about 10 hours of studying to do if I just read the stuff. It usually takes 5 minutes per page if I highlight, so I'm guessing it'll take me 3 just reading it. That would be 540 minutes, so 9 hours. I can do this. It's in the bag! God bless, all.

(05.05.03) PLEASE, NO MORE HEBREW!!!  I worked about 30 to 40 hours on a project where we had to parse about 600 verbs + identify temporal clauses and more.  I'm glad that the exam is over, too.  That was a long exam.  If I didn't focus so hard, I wouldn't have finished it!  One of those dudes....

- In Loving Memory Of... -
HEB 102
(Hebrew 2)

Take this Hebrew quiz...
Which one is actually a Hebrew phrase? (Click on your Answer)

Did you get it right? I sure did! That's because I wrote the exam and know Hebrew to an extent! Man, that exam was hard, though. I didn't have time to study because of all the time I spent on the Extra Credit, and even then I only got about 98% done. I woke up at 6 am to try to finish, and I came up about 1 hr short. Oh, well. Such is life sometimes. Hopefully I will get the extra boost up to an A+, though. That would be great.

This semester, we talked about all the different verb sets (binyanim, or 'buildings'), irregular verbs, and other verbs that by nature give people migraine headaches trying to figure out. Yeah, some of those.... We went down from about 40 at the start of last semester to a solid 7 or 8 taking it for a grade. I can see why!!! It's harder than Spanish!

Flashback to my Spanish Days:
"Yo Quiero Taco Bell"......A+!!!!!

Hebrew is much harder than that. It's a totally different alphabet (like Greek), but there are no English cognates whatsoever (unlike Greek). That makes it more of a game of memorization of patterns and sounds. After a while, it gets more familiar, and I'm definitely not a pro at it, but I can pull A+'es in the class as I'm learning up to 'pro level' (there is one guy in our class who basically IS Hebrew...that kind of scares me! He's known it for about 3 years already, so he's more of a 'pro').

Dr. Lipscomb is our teacher, and he's a VERY dedicated teacher. He has another job on the side and still gets our papers back to us ASAP no matter what. Some of my other teachers (ahem, all my Communications Professors) have scantrons that they have to put in the machine to get the grade. They don't even do that! They have an on-campus grading center for scantrons, and they can pick the results up at the end of the day. I have wondered, though, why it takes 6 weeks for some of my teachers to get me back a Scantron and it takes Dr. Lipscomb 2 days to get me back a totally-Hebrew, non-scantron exam.

We started out Hebrew learning vocabulary and the alphabet, then moved on to a TON of grammar, then after that, verbs, including the different verb systems (7 main ones, a ton of irregular verbs, though). It's a fun class, but sometimes I am working seemingly too hard to 'practice' for a quiz or exam. This is my 5th language, hence I'm used to learning languages, but I'm too meticulous to sit down and accept a 'B'. Anyway, Hebrew was a fun class to take and was challenging, but definitely doable. I'm planning on taking Hebrew 201 in the Fall. I just can't forget what I learned so far, or ELSE!!!

(05.03.03) My mom and dad are out of town, and I'm stuck doing all the chores to clean up this mess.  I still am working on the Hebrew 102 extra credit.  Apparently it will take me about 18 hours total, and I'm about 10 hours in or so.  It's a little extreme, to say the least.  We have to parse all the verbs in the even-numbered sentences in 12 exercises, so probably about 80-90 sentences, and each sentence has about a 6 verb-per-sentence average.  That's intense right there!  I have to do the extra credit to get an A+, though, so I'm going to finish.  I'll be updating this site probably in the breaks between Hebrew and insanity.

I'll be redoing some of the DJ Sterf songs to make them better, and to correct a mistake in one song's lyrics.  Bet you can't find it!  It'll be obvious when you hear the lyric change.  It'll be even hotter in the future, and whoever got a CD already will get a copy of the new one.

I got the check from the bank to pay for Steven's dent ($1600).  I'll put this page up by the end of the day: Steven's Car Remix.  I didn't mess up his car, I just remixed it.  YEAH!  That's it!  I REMIXED it!

Until later, God bless.

PE 261
(Basketball)

PE 261 died Monday, April 28, 2003 in Raleigh, North Carolina.  The class was a lot of fun, especially since after class, I could hang around and play more pick-up games.  I changed the course to credit only since the teacher typically gives about 80% Bs.  I can't afford a 'B', needless to say, in basketball.  50% of my grade was determined on Monday by a skills test.  250 is a Perfect 100%, but as I saw it, even making a 180 was going to be tough in itself!  Here's how it went...

Station 1 - Zigzag Shuffle: Five cones are in the free throw lane, and you have to go in between as many cones as you can in a X-type pattern in 30 seconds.
My Score: 25

Station 2 - Lay-Ups: This station was easy.  It wasn't even timed!  You had to do 6 lay-ups with each hand, and you got 2 points per make.
My Score: 24

Station 3 - Backboard Taps: You have to tap the ball once per jump against the backboard as many times as you can in 30 seconds.  If you tap the ball in the basket when the coach says 'Time', you get two extra points.
My Score: 50

Station 4 - "3-point" shots: You have 30 seconds to hit as many shots as possible around a 15-foot arc.  It was supposed to be 12, but the cone at the top suggested otherwise.  3 points per shot.
My Score: 18

Station 5 - Cone Dribble: You have to weave in and out of cones (each 10 feet apart) and switch hands dribbling after every cone.  1 point per cone passed in 30 seconds.
My Score: 41

Station 6 - Free-Throws: You get 6 shots, and 4 points per free-throw made.  This station wasn't timed, either.
My Score: 20

Station 7 - Lane Slides: You have to go side-to-side in the free throw lane and tap each line as many times as you can in 30 seconds.
My Score: 25

Station 8 - Wall Passes: Pass to the wall 6-feet away as many times as possible in 30 seconds.
My Score: 48

Final Score: 251 (100%).

So I could have taken this course for a grade and gotten an 'A'.  I don't mind too much since it was a risk to take had I taken it.  No doubt about it, though, I got skeeyulz.

In summary, the course was pretty basic, and the coach emphasized fundamentals.  It was nice to have a teacher that wasn't ashamed about stating that he was a Christian and even put his name among the Christian teachers in a newspaper ad for Resurrection Day.  I know some who didn't and had the chance to!  So if you have basketball at NC State, I recommend taking Coach Wall.
